rachael de hek

The Story - Rachael de Hek originally joined the team at NewZealandNZ Limited on a part time basis in 2002 before stepping into the challenging yet rewarding role as Operations Manager in June 2003.

Rachael de HekBorn in Christchurch in 1973, Rachael spent her early years in the small seaside settlement of Ocean View in Dunedin. Here she has fond memories of after school and weekend outdoor adventures with friends, bareback horseriding along the beach, searching for Cockabillies in the local creek and spending the entire summer barefoot!

Rachael de HekRachael further developed her taste for the Kiwi outdoors at the tender age of 12 when she started working after school and weekends for a local horse trekking company, it was here that her love for equestrian and in particular, show jumping, really flourished. It was while working for Otatara Riding Centre and studying at Southland Girls High School that she started learning about responsibility and doing things you love, hence by the time she was 14 she was taking out horsetreks alone, while juggling equestrian training and homework.

Rachael returned to Christchurch and finished her final 3 years of secondary education at Burnside High School. While at Burnside Rachael commenced study for Creative Writing as well as Journalism, and it was in these classes that she crafted her writing abilities. As an active staff member of the school newspaper, Rachael decided that writing was going to be her career of choice, when she wasn’t busy with badminton competitions and training!

Rachael de HekRachael’s vivacious personality, her desire to succeed and the support of her family helped her step successfully into the employment market at the completion of her 7th form year, and it wasn’t long before Rachael was impressing Canterbury employers with her reception and business administration skills. It was during this time that Rachael was offered the challenging role as Immigration Consultant for a private company. Rachael loved this exciting role, the opportunity to meet many different people from diverse cultures as well as a month long employment stint working for an immigration branch in Cairo, Egypt.

Rachael de HekMoving to sunny Blenheim during her mid 20’s was a refreshing change for Rachael, where once again she could immerse herself into the rural culture she loves so dearly. After five years of the easy life and a challenging personal period, Rachael decided it was time to return home to Christchurch, where once again she easily slipped into the corporate world, this time in a front role position for Bayleys Real Estate. It was during this time at Bayleys that Rachael was introduced to Danny de Hek...

Combing her passion for writing with her knowledge and contagious enthusiasm for New Zealand travel, equestrian and the general great outdoors, ensures Rachael is a truly valuable asset to our company and our clients. Rachael also has an incredible ability to slip easily into any role, you can easily find Rachael in a corporate suit confidently discussing business issues with clients, or behind her computer writing up a storm while juggling the daily paper-war and emails - normally wearing her infamous 'fluffy office shoes' (which we all agree have an uncanny resemblance to slippers)!

Rachael's dedication to her work, combined with a passionate outlook on life and a vibrant personality have won her a special place with many of our clients and fellow colleagues, so much so, that our Director, Danny de Hek made Rachael 'Mrs de Hek' in December 2005, and to date they still continue to work 'side by side' in the office.

Rachael continues to indulge her love for writing, New Zealand tourism, international travel, horses and www.newzealandnz.co.nz.
